9290449160 / 9789290449164 New

2013. 30cm. Pp.xvi, 293, ii. Softbound

The aim of the Aquatic Animal Health Code (Aquatic Code) is to contribute to improve animal health and welfare of aquatic animals worldwide and to assure the sanitary safety of international trade in aquatic animals (amphibians, crustaceans, fish and molluscs) and their products. This is achieved through the detailing of health measures to be used by the Competent Authorities of importing and exporting countries to avoid the transfer of agents pathogenic for aquatic animals or humans, while avoiding unjustified trade barriers.

The value of the Aquatic Code is twofold : firstly, the sanitary measures recommended are the result of consensus among the Veterinary Authorities of OIE Members, and secondly, it constitutes a reference within the WTO SPS Agreement as an international standard for animal health and zoonoses.

This, the 16th edition, includes four new chapters : Ch 3.2. Communication; Ch 6.4. Monitoring of the quantities and usage patterns of antimicrobial agents used in aquatic animals; Ch 6.5. Development and harmonisation of national antimicrobial resistance surveillance and monitoring programmes for aquatic animals; and Ch 7.4. Killing of farmed fish for disease control purposes.

This edition also includes revised information on the following subjects: glossary; notification of diseases and epidemiological information; criteria for listing aquatic animal diseases; diseases listed by the OIE; import risk analysis; welfare of farmed fish during transport; welfare aspects of stunning and killing of farmed fish for human consumption.

0813817323 / 9780813817323 New

2010. 26cm. Pp.324. Hardbound.

Fisheries Economics has always been an interdisciplinary field of study with economic analysis based on stock population dynamics, but many published works have focused mainly on theoretical economic issues without much focus on biological details. For the most part, age structured models have been ignored.

Bioeconomics of Fisheries Management is a valuable reference text that presents the economic aspects of fisheries management in a broad bioeconomic framework.

The book is presented in two parts. Part I covers the traditional areas of fisheries economics, covering topics such as open access, optimal and managed fisheries utilization that is analyzed through a traditional one stock/one fleet model. It also presents the basic results in terms of an age structured model. Part II covers material related to more recent work on bioeconomic models when more rigorous biological components became more prevalent, and views fisheries management with an ecosystems-based approach. Accompanying the book is a user-friendly CD with exercises and examples that aids the reader in applying theoretical principles of population dynamics and fisheries management and regulation.

Biology and Management of the World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries, Ault, J.S
14 Ault, J.S Biology and Management of the World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries
084932792X / 9780849327926 New

2007. 26cm. Pp.476. Hardbound.

The core of a multibillion dollar sport fishing industry, tarpon and bonefish, two of the earth's oldest creatures, are experiencing obvious and precipitous population decline. Experienced anglers in the Florida Keys suggest a drop of approximately 90-95 percent for the bonefish population over the last 65 years. Despite the economic value of the industry and scientific value of these ancient fish, very little information is available about their movements and migrations, population dynamics, life histories, and reproductive habits to effectively sustain fisheries for these amazing species.

With contributions from some of the world's leading experts, Biology and Management of the World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries synthesizes existing scientific literature, presents new perspectives, and introduces original scientific research to guide fishery management and conservation efforts for building sustainable tarpon and bonefish fisheries.

Divided into five sections, the book begins with an overview of the state of the world's fisheries for tarpon and bonefish. The second section reviews the biology and life history dynamics of these fish with contributions on conservation genetics, reproductive biology and early life development, as well as resolving gaps in evolutionary lineage and taxonomy. Covering population dynamics and resource ecology, the third section discusses migratory patterns in the Atlantic and the use of tagging. Highlighting the lore and appeal of these fascinating sport fish, the book concludes by introducing a myriad of proposals designed to improve fishery sustainability by conducting census, enforcing catch-and-release programs, and supporting science-based management decision making.

Marine ornamental shrimp are amongst the most heavily traded invertebrate species in the aquarium industry. The majority of traded species are still collected from the wild, having a major effect on ocean ecosystems. An increase in the amount of culture of these species is now a major priority for those in the trade and for marine conservationists.

Marine Ornamental Shrimp provides a global overview of the biology, culture and conservation of the major families of marine ornamental shrimp. Coverage in this thorough volume includes ecological aspects, reproductive biology, major techniques used in culture systems for maturation, larviculture, and juvenile growth, and details of the main conservation issues surrounding these important species including a discussion of the negative aspects of wild specimen collection and the ongoing efforts to mitigate such impacts.

24 Carmona, R (editor) Biology, Conservation and Sustainable Development of Sturgeons
1402084366 / 9781402084362 New

2009. 26cm. Pp.335. Hardbound.

Sturgeons are considered "living fossils", sharing many morphological and biological features with ancestral fish. Furthermore, sturgeons are of the utmost interest from an economic perspective, not only for the caviar but for flesh, too. However, the wild populations of the majority of the species are at serious risk of extinction all over the world. So, it is urgent to develop strategies for both farming culture and conservation and recovery in natural habitats.

Biology, Conservation and Sustainable Development of Sturgeons provides a comprehensive view of the biology and sustainable development of these fish putting emphasis on the Southern Europe autochthonous species such as Acipenser nacarii and Acipenser sturio that share geographical distribution. Other relevant species (such as Huso huso, A. oxyrhinchus, A. ruthenus, A. stellatus) and areas (Germany, Russia, North America) are also considered.

The contents are organised in three sections: Taxonomy and Biogeography (including the morphological and genetic analyses that clarify the taxonomy and phylogeny of sturgeons, focused on those from Southern Europe), Biology and Aquaculture (where several aspects of the developmental biology, feeding, and reproduction are considered in relation to the improvement of sturgeon farming), and Recovery and Conservation (that collates and analyses different recovery research actions, the ecology of the rivers for restoration as well as the problems related to the trade of caviar).
