3 Albert, J.S. & R.E. Reis (editors) Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes
0520268687 / 9780520268685 New

2011. 29cm. Pp.408. Hardbound.

Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes explores the evolutionary origins of a unique ecosystem. The chapters address central themes in the study of tropical biodiversity: why is the Amazon basin home to so many distinct evolutionary lineages? What roles do ecological specialization, speciation, and extinction play in the formation of regional assemblages? How do dispersal barriers contribute to isolation and diversification? Focusing on whole faunas rather than individual taxonomic groups, this volume shows that the area’s high regional diversity is not the result of recent diversification in lowland tropical rainforests. Rather, it is the product of species accumulating over tens of millions of years and across a continental arena.

“A major contribution to our understanding of multiple aspects of the Neotropical freshwater fish fauna. The book will be of interest not only to ichthyologists, but also to a broader audience of researchers working on freshwater organisms and general biogeographic patterns.”-- Richard P. Vari, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Salmonid Fishes : Population Biology, Genetics and Management encompasses features of genetic processes in complexly organised population systems of salmonids, one of the most commercially valuable families of fish worldwide.

Translated from the original work in Russian, the authors have taken the opportunity to update and revise the work, much of it appearing in the English language for the first time.

Covering such important concepts as optimal gene diversity and the unfavourable influence of fishery and hatchery reproduction on the genetic structure of salmon populations, the authors have drawn together a huge wealth of information that will form the cornerstone of much new work in the future.

Comprehensive and beautifully illustrated reference to the killifishes (annual fishes) of tropical west Africa.

The complete text is in both French and English. The introductory chapters present an historical account of the study of the fauna, an outline of the scope and objectives of the work, a geographical sketch of Cameroon, a review of the genus with a key to sub-genera, criteria for the identification of the species, and notes on their ecology, ethology and development. The bulk of the book presents a detailed, critical description of the sub-genera, species groups and species found in Cameroon, followed by the most recent, frequently unpublished, information on their distribution.

Species identification is facilitated by 9 keys which give particular reference to aspects of livery and colouration, and include 2 species and 1 subspecies new to science. The final chapter deals with the biogeography of the genus Aphyosemion in Cameroon.

Faune du Cameroun, Le Genre Aphyosemion, Fauna of Cameroon, The Genus Aphyosemion has had wide appeal with researchers with an interest in the ichthyofauna of tropical west Africa and the many killiphiles and tropical fish hobbyists specialising in these beautiful fishes.

2000. 26cm. Pp.532. Hardbound.

Referred to in the Bible, pictured on the wall-friezes of ancient Egyptian tombs, and a subject of fascination for generations of scientists, the tilapias (Cichlidae: Tilapiini) have featured in the diet and culture of humankind for thousands of years. The present century has seen their spread from Africa throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, largely for food and fisheries purposes.

Tilapias, Biology and Exploitation attempts to pull together our knowledge of this important group, their biology and fisheries and aquaculture, in a single volume, something that has not been done comprehensively for nearly two decades.

A succession of chapters by acknowledged authorities covers evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography, reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care, diet, feeding and digestive physiology, environmental physiology and energetics, the role of tilapias in ecosystems, population dynamics and management, genetics, seed production, nutrition, farming, economics and marketing.

This book is aimed at biologists, fisheries scientists, aquaculturists, and all interested in aquatic ecology.

22 Bleeker, P Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri. / A Precursor of the Fishes of the Indian Archipelago Part 1 - Siluri

English translation, 2009, by M.J.P van Oijen, G.M.P. Loots & F.J.G. Limburg. 25cm. Pp.xii,317. Colour plates. Softbound.

"Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri" by Dr Pieter Bleeker (1858) has been translated completely from Dutch and Latin to English. In contrast to the original publication, the translation does contain the illustrations that were ready in 1858, but could not be included, as at that time facilities for printing coloured plates were lacking in Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia).

"Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri" is a compilation of all Bleeker’s papers on catfishes from 1845 to 1858 and a review of all publications on this group of fishes by other ichthyologists up till 1858.

In this voluminous publication Bleeker mentions all catfish species known at the time, gives keys to genera and species, and extensive descriptions for 99 species occurring in the Indonesian archipelago. All these species are figured. The descriptions include distribution and habitat, and remarks on reproduction, fishery and consumption. Detailed information on the morphology of the described specimens make this work indispensable for recognizing types of the species in the Bleeker collection. A complete list of all 210 ichthyological papers Bleeker published up till 1858 is included.

8890290463 / 9788890290466 New

2011. 24cm. Pp.684. 4000 colour photos. Hardbound.

Bleher's Discus Volume 2 documents the entire history of discus breeding, from its first beginnings to the start of 2011, in finest detail, illustrated with over 4000 photos and with a special foreword by Jack Wattley. The book covers Discus breeding worldwide, its history, breeders, methods and variants.

Chapter 6 features a previously unpublished manuscript by Eduard Schmidt-Focke (1913-1998), to whom the book is dedicated posthumously. "The Doctor" is universally regarded as the father of modern discus breeding, as many, if not the majority, of the cultivated forms that exist today originate from him. His forms are documented in text and pictures, from his early days right through the end.

The same chapter also immortalises other pioneers of discus breeding worldwide, their history and achievements, as well as modern discus breeders all over Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Antipodes. And, of course, in Asia, nowadays the 'capital' of discus breeding; all the cultivated forms have been researched in detail, revealing the ancestry of the so-called Pigeon Blood and the other multitudinous variants and sports, often with "fantasy names".

More than 700 breeders from 50 countries are included, with details of their set-ups, methods, secrets, and tricks - the vast majority hitherto unpublished anywhere in the world. The chapter concludes with a detailed and easy to understand overview of the optimal breeding methods for both wild-caught discus and cultivated forms, based on the author’s extensive knowledge accumulated over several decades.

Chapter 7 presents the discus variants cultivated worldwide, with details of their breeders, in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia, and includes the latest cultivated forms and new wild-caught variants discovered since the publication of volume 1 in 2006.

The book concludes with the latest information on the classification of cultivated forms, plus updates on taxonomy and distribution.

25 Bone, Q. & R.H. Moore Biology of Fishes, third edition
0415375622 / 9780415375627 New

2008. 24cm. Pp.xv,478. Figures & tables. Paperback.

The Third Edition of Biology of Fishes is chiefly about fish as remarkably efficient machines for coping with the many problems that life in water entails, and looks at many such special cases.

Biology of Fishes does not try to cover all aspects of fish biology, but focuses on the ingenious ways in which fish have resolved the particular problems that come from living in water, especially body fluid regulation, locomotion, feeding mechanisms, and sensory systems. Enough detail is provided for the reader to be able to go on and use primary research papers. Each chapter has been thoroughly updated and a new chapter on the immune system has been added.
