Ornamental Fish Farming is a vast compendium on commercially farming and marketing freshwater ornamental fish and provides a huge amount of essential information designed to be useful to and usable by readers at all levels of ability, from hobbyists seeking to undertake their first spawning of ornamental fish, to fully established fish farm operators. Most importantly, it provides the information needed to progress from beginner to large-scale commercial production, notably including ways to avoid the common pitfalls. Some of the information may also be of value to producers of fingerlings of freshwater food fish, especially in procedures related to larval rearing.

The book provides rarely published techniques for breeding tropical fish and goldfish, all in one publication. Information is given in considerable detail, providing both basic and advanced techniques, written in easily understandable language, with numerous step-by-step procedures for various aspects of fish farming. Included is a comprehensive section on quarantining fish and the use of hormone injection to induce spawning.

Covers 133 species from 14 major commercial families/groups of fish with concise commercial production techniques for each.

2000. 26cm. Pp.532. Hardbound.

Referred to in the Bible, pictured on the wall-friezes of ancient Egyptian tombs, and a subject of fascination for generations of scientists, the tilapias (Cichlidae: Tilapiini) have featured in the diet and culture of humankind for thousands of years. The present century has seen their spread from Africa throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, largely for food and fisheries purposes.

Tilapias, Biology and Exploitation attempts to pull together our knowledge of this important group, their biology and fisheries and aquaculture, in a single volume, something that has not been done comprehensively for nearly two decades.

A succession of chapters by acknowledged authorities covers evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography, reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care, diet, feeding and digestive physiology, environmental physiology and energetics, the role of tilapias in ecosystems, population dynamics and management, genetics, seed production, nutrition, farming, economics and marketing.

This book is aimed at biologists, fisheries scientists, aquaculturists, and all interested in aquatic ecology.

Contents : Preface. 1. Evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography; B.M. McAndrew. 2. Reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care; G.A. Turner, R.F. Robinson. 3. 2000. 26cm. Pp.384. 110 photos & figures. Hardbound.

Research on the large array of tropical estuarine fishes has increased markedly in recent years and hence scientific knowledge about most aspects of these important fishes' biology and ecology is now catching up with that of their temperate equivalents.

Tropical Estuarine Fishes, Ecology, Exploitation & Conservation is a landmark book which draws together a vast wealth of information on tropical estuarine fishes and provides a vital reference point for all aspects of their study.

The book's comprehensive contents include thorough coverage of the types and distribution of these fishes, their diversity and the environmental conditions and communities in which they live.

Full details of their biology and ecology are included, as are details of these fishes' dependence on estuaries, man's interaction with the estuarine fish community and the conservation of estuarine species and the often threatened habitats upon which they depend.

Tropical estuaries are among the most modified and threatened of aquatic environments, supporting innumerable fisheries essential to the regions in which they occur.

Fish and Fisheries of Tropical Estuaries synthesizes the wealth of data available in this area, much of it being brought together by Stephen Blaber for the first time. It provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the fishes, the environments in which they live, and the management of biologically healthy estuaries and sustainable fisheries.

52 Bleeker, P Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri. / A Precursor of the Fishes of the Indian Archipelago Part 1 - Siluri
978906391004 New
English translation, 2009, by M.J.P van Oijen, G.M.P. Loots & F.J.G. Limburg. 25cm. Pp.xii,317. Colour plates. Softbound.

"Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri" by Dr Pieter Bleeker (1858) has been translated completely from Dutch and Latin to English. In contrast to the original publication, the translation does contain the illustrations that were ready in 1858, but could not be included, as at that time facilities for printing coloured plates were lacking in Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia).

"Ichthyologiae Archipelagi Indici Prodromus. Volumen I. Siluri" is a compilation of all Bleeker’s papers on catfishes from 1845 to 1858 and a review of all publications on this group of fishes by other ichthyologists up till 1858.

In this voluminous publication Bleeker mentions all catfish species known at the time, gives keys to genera and species, and extensive descriptions for 99 species occurring in the Indonesian archipelago. All these species are figured. The descriptions include distribution and habitat, and remarks on reproduction, fishery and consumption. Detailed information on the morphology of the described specimens make this work indispensable for recognizing types of the species in the Bleeker collection. A complete list of all 210 ichthyological papers Bleeker published up till 1858 is included.
