2016. 30cm. Pp.xxii, [ii], 1388. Colour photos, text figures, maps. Hardbound.

The essential reference for selecting, using, and interpreting methods and results related to human parasitic infections.

This major work by Lynne Garcia, a recognized authority on diagnostic parasitology, has been completely updated to include the dramatic changes that have occurred in the field of diagnostic medical parasitology over the past decade. Diagnostic Medical Parasitology, Sixth Edition, features newly recognized human parasites, improved diagnostic techniques defined by new regulatory requirements, implementation of testing based on molecular techniques, expanded tables and colour photographs, and the latest information on parasitic infections.

Diagnostic Medical Parasitology contains two sections within this single volume. The first provides clear, concise diagnostic procedures for clinical laboratory use, including ordering and collection recommendations, techniques for parasite recovery and identification that are relevant throughout the world. This section also thoroughly examines the pros and cons of various diagnostic options, including extensive report comments for result clarification and enhancement.

The second section presents comprehensive discussions of common and uncommon individual human parasites. It provides information related to life cycle, morphology, and clinical disease in both the immunocompetent and immunocompromised patient including diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and prevention. There are also expanded sections on artifacts, case histories, and histologic findings that provide discussion and tips related to potential diagnostic problems. Both book sections feature extensive colour illustrations related to each technique and parasite presented, as well as expanded colour plates of human parasites.

Diagnostic Medical Parasitology is a unique and valuable resource for microbiologists and clinical laboratory scientists/bench technologists in diagnostic laboratories and academic settings, infectious disease physicians, pathologists, health care specialists, and public health professionals.

Venoms to Drugs : Venom as a Source for the Development of Human Therapeutics, King, Glenn F (editor)
69 King, Glenn F (editor) Venoms to Drugs : Venom as a Source for the Development of Human Therapeutics
1849736634 / 9781849736633 New

2015. 26cm. Pp.320. Hardbound.

The pharmaceutical industry has become increasingly interested in biologics from animal venoms as a potential source for therapeutic agents in recent years, with a particularly emphasis on peptides. To date six drugs derived from venom peptides or proteins have been approved by the FDA, with nine further agents currently being investigated in clinical trials. In addition to these drugs in approved or advanced stages of development, many more peptides and proteins are being studied in varying stages of preclinical development. This unique book provides an up to date and comprehensive account of the potential of peptides and proteins from animal venoms as possible therapeutics. Topics covered include chemistry and structural biology of animal venoms, proteomic and transcriptomic approaches to drug discovery, bioassays, high-throughput screens and target identification, and reptile, scorpion, spider and cone snail venoms as a platform for drug development. Case studies are used to illustrate methods and successes and highlight issues surrounding administration and other important lessons that have been learnt from the development of approved therapeutics based on venoms. The first text to focus on this fascinating area and bridging an important gap, this book provides the reader with essential and current knowledge on this fast-developing area. Venoms to Drugs will find wide readership with researchers working in academia and industry working in all medicinal and pharmaceutical areas.

Professor Glenn King has been working on animal venoms since 1996. He has extensive experience in the discovery, production, and structural and functional characterization of venom proteins, and is intimately aware of the issues surrounding their development as drugs and insecticides. In 2006, Professor King founded an agricultural biotechnology company, Vestaron Corporation, that is developing spider-venom peptides, discovered in the lab, as bioinsecticides. His current research is largely focussed on the development of venom peptides as analgesics for the treatment of chronic pain.

70 Koehler-Rollefson, B ; P.Mundy & E.Mathias A Field Manual of Camel Diseases, Traditional and Modern Veterinary Care for the Dromedary
185339503X / 9781853395031 New

2006. 26cm. Pp.vxi,i,254. Text figures & maps. Paperback.

The one-humped camel, or dromedary, is one of the worlds hardiest domesticated animals. A vital source of transport, meat, milk and income for pastoralists in the Sahel, East Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, the camel can carry heavy loads for days in some of the worlds most hostile conditions. But even camels fall ill.

A Field Manual of Camel Diseases is the first practical guide to camel diseases designed for use in low technology environments. The manual details some 80 major camel diseases and conditions, ranging from abortions to wry neck syndrome. For each disease, the authors give the disease signs, its causes, and simple prevention and treatment methods. Both scientific and tried and tested traditional treatments are presented, thus enabling the veterinarian or livestock practitioner to make the most appropriate choice in the prevailing circumstances. A section on procedures explains how to examine a camel, take samples for laboratory analysis and apply various types of medicines.

Written in straightforward language, avoiding scientific terminology wherever possible. Technical vocabulary is explained in a comprehensive glossary. Organised by the symptom or sign of the disease and the part of the body most affected to help rapid identification. Local and scientific names of diseases and plants are given, enabling enhanced communication and understanding between pastoralist and veterinarian. A list of common medicines and their dosages acts as an aide-memoire. Illustrated throughout by artists familiar with camels to show clearly the diseases and how to treat them.

2006. 30cm. Pp.34. Figures, tables and maps (some colour), extensive bibliography. Binding : ebook

Ticks are highly sensitive to changes in seasonal climate. Since the 1980s, tick vectors have increased in density and spread into higher latitudes and altitudes in Europe. Future climate change in Europe is therefore likely to facilitate the spread of Lyme borreliosis in the same way, while reducing its occurrence in areas that become hotter and drier.

Although it is treatable with antibiotics, Lyme borreliosis is the most common vector-borne disease in Europe and may lead to severe complications of the neurological system, the heart, and the joints. It is caused by a spirochete, which is transmitted to humans by ticks whose reservoir animals are small rodents, insectivores, hares and birds.

Lyme borreliosis in Europe reviews the impacts of climate change on Lyme borreliosis in the region.

1903018315 / 9781903018316 New

2004. 18cm. Pp.144. 20 photos. Paperback.

The elder is a tree or bush (or even a weed) for which humanity has found a use for each and every part: the leaf, the bark, the wood or branch, the flower, the berries or fruit. Some of these functions are both mythic and grounded in superstition: that the elder encourgaes the fertility of cattle for instance; or its relation to witchcraft; or its place in Celtic folklore. Others are more nearly medicinal: it was an essential to classical and medieval physicians. And, of course, it may be eaten or drunk. The flowers lend their fragrance to gooseberries, or are sensational as a Spring fritter. The berries are wonderful as ice-cream, or as wine.

Ria Loohuizen has pursued the elder into every corner of history, literature and kitchen usefulness. She claims that this is only the second book on the tree (the first being published in 1644).

The Elder, In History, Myth and Cookery explores its meaning to early physicians, its place in mythology and folklore, its occurance in literature and gives maximum exposure to recipes for medicaments, sweet dishes and drinks. Here you may find how to make elder ointments or lotions to ward off rheumatism as well as chilblains. And detailed instructions for elderflower champagne, or elderflower syrup, or elderberry wine. Then there are recipes for tarts, fools, jams, jellies, fritters, glazes and vinegars as well as details obout the Jew's Ear fungus which grows only on the elder tree.

This book was first published in Holland in 2002, this the first English edition, translated by the author. Ria Loohuizen has lived in America and Spain and is now living in Amsterdam. She is a translator of prose and poetry from English and Spanish as well as a published author of cookery books about the chestnut, wild mushrooms and the quince.
