Foreward by Sven Kullander and the chapter ‘The Scientific Study of Danionins' contributed by Ralf Britz. Includes information on the aquarium care and breeding and one specific chapter dealing with the breeding of Danionella translucida. Essential reference.

Updated edition : Since this book was published in December 2010 there have been a number of additions.

Devario annandalei was inadvertently missed out from the original manuscript and is now included, along with photographs of Devario acrostomus and Devario kakheinensis.

The account for Devario neilgherrensis is updated with a new page and picture.

A new species, Danio kysonensis is added although real information is sparse.

There are now no less than seven species of Sundadanio described and reference to these is included.

All of the above additions and amendments have been incorporated into this copy.

9871371411 / 9789871371419 New

2010. 26cm. Pp.665. 240 photos & figures. Hardbound.

Ictiología is a modern and comprehensive textbook of ichthyology providing an overview of recent ichthyological reasearch in South America, particularly Argentina.

The distribution of fish in inland aquatic environments is not uniform, the fish fauna of South America is very diverse with three major drainage basins on the continent. The way of life of the freshwater fishes of South America, particularly Argentina, and its relationship to the environment are treated by the authors, taking into account the actions exerted by the man on aquatic ecosystems (pollution, dams and the introduction of species) and their associated fish fauna. Useful reference is paid to the early life stages of bony fishes (their eggs and larvae) which are extremely vulnerable to environmental threats.

A standard reference for both students and professionals. Spanish text, Latin nomenclature.

500 copies only.

Biology of Perch, Couture, Patrice & Greg Pyle
85 Couture, Patrice & Greg Pyle Biology of Perch
1498730329 / 9781498730327 New

2015. 26cm. Pp.350. 24 colour photos, 52 figures. Hardbound.

The genus Perca includes only three species of fish, but they are ubiquitous and abundant in freshwater and brackish environments of the northern hemisphere, from North America to Europe and Asia. These species are important both ecologically and economically. In Biology of Perch, world-renowned specialists review and update the biology of these fish.

The book opens with a review of the genetic makeup of this complex assemblage from early post-glacial dispersion to the colonization of new habitats. The influences of geomorphological and biological factors on the dispersal of yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are explored.

Two case studies exploit unique historical databases to follow population dynamics of yellow perch and European perch (P. fluviatilis) and to demonstrate how fisheries and habitat management can drastically influence the fate of fish populations. Three other chapters are dedicated to the general reproductive physiology, parasitology, and behavior of Perca species. The third species, the Balkhash perch (P. schrenkii), is a rare and threatened species of the Balkans, and a chapter is dedicated to its biology.

The book ends with a review of the use of Perca species around the world as sentinels of ecological integrity and biomonitors in ecotoxicological studies.

Freshwater Fisheries Ecology, Craig, John F
86 Craig, John F Freshwater Fisheries Ecology
1118394429 / 9781118394427 New

2015. 26cm. Pp.888. Colour photos, figures, tables. Hardbound.

Freshwater Fisheries Ecology is truly a landmark publication, containing contributions from over 100 experts and defines what we have globally, what we are going to lose and have to mitigate for, and what, given the right tools, we can save. To estimate potential production, the dynamics of freshwater ecosystems (rivers, lakes and estuaries) need to be understood. These dynamics are diverse as are the earth's freshwater fisheries resources (from boreal to tropical regions), and these influence how fisheries are both utilized and abused.

Three main types of fisheries are described within the book: artisanal, commercial and recreational, and the tools which have evolved for fisheries governance and management, including assessment methods, are described.

This book also covers in detail fisheries development, providing information on improving fisheries through environmental and habitat evaluation, enhancement and rehabilitation, aquaculture, genetically modified fishes and sustainability, and thoroughly reviews the negative impacts on fisheries including excessive harvesting, climate change, toxicology, impoundments, barriers and abstractions, non-native species and eutrophication. Finally, key areas of future research are outlined.

Inland fisheries are vital for the livelihoods and food resources of humans worldwide but their importance is underestimated, probably because large numbers of small, local operators are involved.

Mullets (grey mullets) are a family (Mugilidae) and order of ray-finned fish found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide. There are approximately 80 species of mullet; these fish have been considered an important food source in Mediterranean Europe since Roman times. This book provides a long overdue update on the biology and ecology of mullets and features comprehensive coverage of the key features of the Mugilidae family, such as recent DNA evidence and morphological data that challenge the traditional taxonomy.

The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa, Darwall, Will ; K. Smith, D. Tweddle & P. Skelton
96 Darwall, Will ; K. Smith, D. Tweddle & P. Skelton The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa
2831711266 / 9782831711263 New

2009. 28cm. Pp.118. Binding : ebook.

Biodiversity within inland water ecosystems in southern Africa is highly diverse and of great importance to livelihoods and economies, however, development activities are not always compatible with the conservation of this diversity and it is poorly represented in the development planning process. One of the main reasons is a lack of readily available information on the status and distribution of inland water taxa.

In response to this need for information, the IUCN Species Programme, in collaboration with the South Africa Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) conducted a regional assessment of 1,279 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs, and selected families of aquatic plants from across southern Africa, resulting in this book, The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa.

In the process of the study, which is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, regional experts from five of these countries were trained in biodiversity assessment methods, including application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and species mapping using GIS software. Distribution ranges have been mapped for the majority of species so providing an important tool for application to the conservation and development planning processes.

Amongst reef-fishes, few could compete with the beauty of angelfishes. Many species remain small in size, around the 10 cm mark, and combined with their beauty, and often rarity, are sought after in the aquarium trade. At present 8 genera and at least 88 species are known, some still undescribed, and all are included in Angelfishes - A Comprehensive Guide to Pomacanthidae with stunning colour photographs, including those species that live in deep water. In addition, many new colour morphs are shown. A must for all marine aquarists.
