4 Flore Illustrée des Champignons d'Afrique Centrale.

10 Nutrition Education in Primary Schools. A planning guide for curriculum development
92-5-105454-1 New
2005, 2 spiralbound volumes in a bookcase with a set of worksheets and a classroom curriculum chart. Vol. 1: The Reader, 250 pp.; Vol. 2: The Activities, 276 pp. Healthy, well-nourished and educated people are a country's most precious asset for achieving economic and social development. Access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food is essential for reaching this goal. However, this by itself is not enough. People also need to understand what constitutes an appropriate diet for health, and they need to have the skills and the motivation to make proper food choices and practice healthy eating habits. Helping people to do so is the role of nutrition education. Many eating habits are formed during childhood and they can last a lifetime. It is therefore important for children to learn the benefits of good nutrition and to develop healthy eating habits. Schools are an excellent setting for bringing nutrition education to children at an early stage and through qualified staff. This Planning Guide will assist educators worldwide in establishing an effective nutrition education programme that encourages behaviour change. The material can be used at national or local level and is intended for use by a team of educators and health staff, including education inspectors, curriculum planners, teacher educators, teachers, nutritionists and health workers.

15 The Status and Distribution of European Mammals
New
2007. 28cm. Paperback. Numerous scientific studies show that biodiversity in Europe has been declining rapidly for some time and that this pattern has been matched by the great periods of expansion and intensification of land use. This first assessment of the Red List status of Europe’s and the European Union’s mammals shows us that 15% of our species are threatened with extinction, it shows that 27% were identified as declining and another 33% had an unknown population trend. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level - in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status.

16 Pines of Silvicultural Importance
New
2002. 24cm. Pp.608. Hardback. The genus Pinus is of great ecological and commercial importance and it is notable for its vast geographic range and the sheer area that its various species occupy. Its natural range is almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere, where it often forms the dominant vegetation cover. However, it is also of silvicultural significance in many countries in the southern hemisphere. Pines play an important role in the ecosystems of which they form part, and provide a valuable source of fibre, timber and other secondary products for human use. Worldwide, pines form a large part of the annual wood harvest and the immature plantation forests of the future. This reflects their amenability to cultivation, their broad site tolerances, and the ease of processing their wood for a multitude of end-uses. For each species, there is information on common names, taxonomy, botanical features, natural distribution, latitude range, climate, soil properties, silvicultural characteristics, pests, wood and non-wood products.

21 Boma 1880-1920, Colonial Capital City or Cosmopolitan Trading Post ?
New
Book CD. 2006. Boma, situated along the River Congo close to the Atlantic Ocean, was an important centre of the slave trade until approximately 1868. French, British, Portuguese and Dutch trading companies maintained branches there. The first Belgian settler arrived only in 1874. The 1885 Berlin Conference put Boma under the authority of Leopold II, and between 1886 and 1929, Boma would function as a capital city, first of the Congo Free State, then from 1908, of the Belgian Congo. Boma grew from a simple trading post to a modest sized 'city'. However, it would never attain the stature of a monumental capital. The population of Boma was heterogeneous. Europeans of various nationalities lived next to inhabitants from very diverse regions of Central and West Africa. Nevertheless, this cosmopolitan society was distinguished by a clear hierarchy of whites over blacks. This cd-rom presents the Congolese city of Boma around 1900. Four themes (visit, capital, city, society and violence) allow access to almost 100 historical images, most of which are published here for the first time. Navigating these images, you can browse part of the history of the then capital of the Congo Free State.

22 Deep-Sea Sponge Grounds : Reservoirs of Biodiversity
9280730819 New

2010. 26cm. Pp.84. Paperback.

This report draws together scientific understanding of deep-water sponge grounds alongside the threats they face and ways in which they can be conserved. Beginning with a summary of research approaches, sponge biology and biodiversity, the report also gives up-to-date case studies of particular deep-water sponge habitats from around the world. These include the spectacular giant glass sponge reefs of British Columbia, a relic of the time of the dinosaurs, and the diverse sponge kingdom of Antarctica. Long-overlooked, recent research now shows that deep-water sponge grounds form complex, slow-growing and long-lived habitats in many parts of the global ocean. As well as forming local biodiversity centres, deep-water sponges are also storehouses of novel chemical compounds, some of which show promise in the fight against cancer and other diseases.

Despite their inherent and biotechnological value, deep-water sponge grounds have been damaged by bottom fishing. This report considers the international policy context in which deep-water sponge grounds can be conserved and concludes with a series of expert recommendations for conservation managers and international policy makers. The recommendations set out a series of actions so that these vulnerable marine ecosystems can be conserved for future generations.

23 Good Practices for the Meat Industry.
92-5-105146-1 New
FAO. 2004. 26cm. Pp.322. Hardbound ring-binder. In recent years, public concern about the safety of foods of animal origin has heightened due to problems that have arisen with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), as well as with outbreaks of food-borne bacterial infections, and food contamination with toxic agents (e.g. dioxin). These problems have serious implications for national food safety, the development of the animal products industry and for international trade in livestock products. Accordingly, the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission is in the final stages of negotiation of a new Code of hygienic practice for meat. The Code implies a transition from meat inspection towards a risk-based approach covering the entire food chain. The Manual on good practices for the meat industry aims to assist the industry to prepare itself for compliance with the new regulatory framework, which is expected to come into force when the Code is approved in 2005. It is targeted at the meat industry in developing countries and in emerging economies in their endeavour to meet the rising quality and safety requirements both of the export industry and domestic markets, with the increased participation of large-scale retailers. The publication is intended to guide managers of abattoirs and the meat industry. It will also be of value to veterinarians engaged in meat inspection, with their supervisory roles in meat hygiene. The manual, well illustrated, is published in detachable modules and also serves as a training resource. The Codex Alimentarius "Draft code of hygienic practice for meat" is included as an appendix.

24 Cold Water Fisheries in the Trans-Himalayan Countries.
925104807X New
FAO. 2002. 26cm. Pp.376. Softbound. The trans-Himalayan region encompasses a number of countries situated in the midland and highland areas of the Himalayas, Karakoram and, in a broad sense also, in Hindu Kush and Pamir. The mountains are characterized by a very low level of human development, with full exploitation or overexploitation of the natural resources. Fisheries play an important role in providing food and income to the mountain people. This volume contains contributions presented at a Symposium on Cold Water Fishes of the Trans-Himalayan Region, held in July 2001 in Nepal. The Symposium reviewed information, experiences, ideas and findings related to fish and fisheries in the region. Special attention was given to fish species distribution, fishing intensity, socio-economic conditions and livelihoods of fisher communities, as well as to the impacts of environment degradation, conservation measures and aquaculture technologies on indigenous and exotic cold water fish. The Symposium highlighted the role of fisheries in providing food and income to people within the trans-Himalayas and Karakoram. Recognizing the need to increase the role of aquatic resources in poverty alleviation, the Symposium urged national governments to give greater attention to fisheries development in mountain areas.

28 Papers Presented at the Expert Consultation on Interactions between Sea Turtles and Fisheries within an Ecosystem Context. Rome, 9-12 March 2004
New
2004. 26cm. Pp.244. Paperback. This meeting was attended by 11 experts from seven countries, covering expertise related to sea turtle biology and conservation, fishing gear technology, fisheries management and socio-economics. This document includes all the contributions prepared by the participating experts as background information to the Expert Consultation. The first four papers provide an overview of available information on biology, distribution and main sources of natural and man-induced sea turtle mortality for the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea, respectively. Gear technology developments to reduce impacts on sea turtles are reviewed in papers 5 to 7. Special emphasis is given to the Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) and mitigation measures in pelagic longline fishing. Management experiences in reducing sea turtle bycatch in coastal fisheries, including implementation of technology standards and area/time closures, are covered by paper 8. Examples of conservation efforts aimed at preserving nesting beach habitats and at preventing direct take of sea turtles and their eggs are presented for two locations in Indonesia (paper 9). The examples show the importance of community empowerment in the implementation of conservation measures. Finally, paper 10 describes an important case study from the State of Orissa (India). Here olive ridley turtles congregate in large numbers in the shallow coastal waters that also happen to be the richest fishing grounds and the source of livelihoods for traditional fishing communities in that region. Experiences made in implementing various management measures to reduce sea turtle mortality due to fishing are presented, with particular emphasis on the consequences that these have had on traditional fishing communities.

35 Marine Litter: A Global Challenge
9280730290 New
2009. 28cm. Pp.232. Paperback. Marine litter is an ecological, economic, health and aesthetic problem. It is a complex and multi-dimensional challenge with significant implications for the marine and coastal environment, and human activities all over the world. The persistence of marine litter is the result of a lack of coordinated global and regional strategies, and deficiencies in the implementation and enforcement of existing programmes, regulations and standards at all levels – international, regional and national.

The UNEP Global Initiative on Marine Litter provides a platform for the management of marine litter through the establishment of partnerships, cooperative arrangements and coordination of joint activities. It has succeeded in organizing and implementing regional activities on marine litter around the world. In addition to activities in 12 Regional Seas, UNEP commissioned preparation of several documents on specific topics, including UNEP/IOC Guidelines for monitoring of marine litter; Abandoned and lost fishing gear; and Marine litter and market-based instruments.

This report provides an overview of the status of marine litter in UNEP's assisted Regional Seas, and highlights the amounts, main sources, impacts, and economics of marine litter, and discusses legislation, policies, compliance and enforcement mechanisms; institutional frameworks and stakeholder involvement; education and outreach strategies; monitoring programmes and research; mitigation activities among other aspects.

It concludes that there is an urgent need to approach the issue of marine litter through better enforcement of laws and regulations, expanded outreach and educational campaigns and the employment of strong economic instruments and incentives. It proposes some general recommendations, based on the materials presented in the document, and specific recommendations for fourteen different issues regarding marine litter.

61 Checklist of the Parasites of Fishes of Viet Nam
978925105635 New
2007. 29cm. Pp.140. Paperback. Checklist summarizing information on the parasites of Vietnamese fishes contained in world literature dating from the earliest known record (Billet 1898) to the end of 2003. Information is presented in the form of parasite-host and host-parasite lists and contains 453 named species of parasites. Many records of parasites not identified to species level are also included. The parasite-host list is organized on a taxonomic basis and provides information for each parasite species on the environment (freshwater, brackish water, marine), the location (site of infection) in or on its host(s), the species of host(s) infected, the known geographic distribution (by administrative division) in Viet Nam and the published sources for each host and locality record. The host-parasite list is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts, and includes, for each host, the English language and local (Vietnamese) common names, environment (freshwater, brackish water, marine), status in Viet Nam (native or exotic) and information on the known distribution in Viet Nam of the parasites. Both lists are accompanied by remarks and footnotes, as warranted, giving specific information on points of systematics, nomenclature, possible misidentifications, introductions, etc. Citations are included for all references, as well as parasite and host indices. The parasite fauna of fishes of Viet Nam has received considerable attention, particularly by scientists of the former Soviet Union, in the marine environment, and by Vietnamese and Czech freshwater scientists. Nevertheless, parasites have been recorded from only about ten percent of the more than 1 300 species of marine and freshwater fish occurring in the waters of Viet Nam. Knowledge of freshwater fauna is hampered by a lack of descriptive work and by many probable misidentifications of parasites, due to the tendency of Vietnamese workers to report European species from the local fish fauna.

69 Fish Industry of Russia - Production, Trade, Markets and Investment
New
2006. 30cm. Pp.211. Paperback. The Survey provides a comprehensive overview and insights into all the main aspects of the Russian fishing industry, covering fish harvesting, fish farming, the fishing fleet, trade, processing, markets and business and investment opportunities. The Russian Federation attracts attention from investors and traders all over the world. With more than 140 million inhabitants and substantially higher economic growth rates than in most other countries, the possibilities seem abundant. However, for many investors and traders there are still barriers to overcome. Lack of transparency at different administrative levels, a developing legislation, and lack of experience in operating in Russia are some of the factors that make potential foreign partners think twice. Russia is among the top ten countries in the world as regards marine and inland capture fisheries, and a huge player in terms of processing, trade and a rapidly developing seafood market. Fish farming in Russia is growing and has good potential. Overall the country’s fishing sector holds great potential for development, trade and investments with opportunities for foreign partners, suppliers and investors. However, the Russian fisheries sector also lacks transparency, and this makes it difficult to attract financing from financial institutions and banks. It is against this background that foreign decision makers and enterprises are constantly seeking more and reliable information to understand the cooperation and business opportunities in the Russian fishery sector. The report also includes annexes with contact names and details of fishing, processing and trading companies in Russia together with a wide range of statistics and analyses.

75 Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005. Progress towards sustainable forest management
9251054819 New
2006. 28cm. Pp.352. Paperback. FAO has been coordinating global forest resources assessments every five to ten years since 1946. The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005) was carried out between 2003 and 2005 and involved more than 800 people, including 172 officially nominated national correspondents, their colleagues, an Advisory Group, international experts, FAO staff, consultants and volunteers from around the world. Information has been collated from 229 countries and territories for three points in time: 1990, 2000 and 2005. FRA 2005 is the most comprehensive assessment of forests and forestry to date - not only in terms of the number of countries and people involved, but also in terms of scope. It examines the current status and recent trends for about 40 variables covering the extent, condition, uses and values of forests and other wooded land, with the aim of assessing all benefits from forest resources. The results are presented according to six thematic elements of sustainable forest management. FAO worked closely with countries and specialists in the design and implementation of FRA 2005 - through regular contact, expert consultations, training for national correspondents and ten regional and subregional workshops. The outcome is better data, a more transparent reporting process and enhanced national capacity in data analysis and reporting.

96 Estado mundial de la pesca y la acuicultura 2006
9789253055685 New
2007. 28cm. Pp.194. Paperback + CD-ROM.

98 People, Forests and Trees in West and Central Asia. Outlook for 2020
9789251056714 New
2007. 28cm. Pp.162. Paperback. In West and Central Asia, governments, the private sector, communities, farmers and civil society organizations are making substantial efforts to improve the management of forest and tree resources. However, most countries face enormous challenges in this regard. This publication, the main report of the Forestry Outlook Study for West and Central Asia (FOWECA), provides a long-term perspective of changes in the forest sector. Implemented in partnership with the countries, the study covered 23 countries in West Asia, Central Asia and the southern Caucasus. This report outlines the probable developments, including broader regional and global issues which need to be taken into account in developing national policies and programmes. It then discusses what needs to be done to enhance the contribution of forests and trees to society. It focuses particularly on probable development scenarios, their implications for society in terms of the availability of goods and services, and the priorities and strategies that may be pursued to improve the situation. This analysis will be of particular interest to planners, investors and decision-makers at the regional, subregional and national levels.
