1 Chen, D. (editor) Aqualog Asian Arowana
393602796X / 9783936027969 New

31cm. Pp.244. Numerous colour photos. Hardbound.

Aqualog Asian Arowana is an exceptional photo-guide and reference to the varieties and care of aquarium bred Asian Arowana. This is the English edition of volume 3 of 'The Ever Changing Asian Arowana'. Volumes 1 and 2 were only available in Chinese; volume 3 (a stand-alone volume which revises and brings the work uptodate) is only available in English.

Presents an outstanding photo-gallery of varieties, behaviour and suitable aquaria with contributions and advice from veterans of the hobby in Taiwan and Singapore. The current status of Arowana farms is covered with photos and information of the main players in the field. Information on water quality, feeding and commonly encountered diseases is provided together with advice concerning suitable tank mates of differing species for this most spectacular of fishes. The Malaysian Nature Society advises that, despite being protected, this species is seriously under threat of extinction by over-collection for the aquarium trade, hardly surprising as the Arowana symbolises wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture and is reputed to bring good health and good luck to its owners. The fish is a mouth breeder with small clutches produced each time. Besides over-collecting, the deterioration of their freshwater habitat due to pollution and siltation also contributes to their decline.

This book is of great interest to aro-fans, especially in the Chinese and Asian communities and is also being bought by ichthyologists, conservationists, librarians, public zoos and aquaria, luxury hotels and restaurants with display aquaria. It is one of the very few genuinely comprehensive books in English on the subject and the only one that is reasonably priced. This book measures 31 x 22 x 2cm, is printed in high gloss on quality paper with a quality binding; it weighs over 1.5kg.
