Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean, Boltovskoy, Demetrio (editor)
1 Boltovskoy, Demetrio (editor) Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean
9075000766 / 9789075000764 New

2005. Biodiversity DVD.

Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean is a unique taxonomic reference work covering almost 2,600 plankton species occurring in the South Atlantic Ocean.

These are classified under 1,300 higher taxa, such as the Medusae, Siphonophorae, Ctenophora, Chaetognatha, planktonic Tunicata and Polychaeta, pelagic Gastropoda and Cephalopoda, and a vast group of planktonic Crustacea. Fifteen of the 28 higher-level groups treated have new interactive, illustrated keys to family, genus or species level. Also, four different Identifylt keys are provided on this DVD-ROM: one for the Foraminifera, one for the Siphonophorae, and two for the Hydromedusae.

IdentifyIt is a multiple-entry identification key that allows you to define multiple characters for a specimen and then calculates which species is the closest match. For most groups, geographical and vertical distribution patterns are given, from equatorial waters to the Antarctic circumpolar belt. General introductory information on morphology, reproduction, development, feeding, production rates, etc. is included, and the 3345 literature references provided will help to guide the user towards the relevant papers on each subject. A section on methodology is part of this information system as well. Common biological, morphological and geographical terms are captured in an illustrated glossary defining 1375 terms. All text is ‘hyperlinked’, enabling quick navigation through the massive amount of information.

This authoritative work, compiled and edited by Prof. Demetrio Boltovskoy, provides contributions from 41 oceanographers and marine biologists. It is a remarkable and fundamental source of information for marine biologists, oceanographers, environmentalists and students and deserves to be widely available in both personal and scientific libraries.

Windows XP and Macintosh OSX DVD-ROM.

2 Coesèl, P.F.M. & K.J. Meesters Desmids of the Lowlands, Mesotaeniaceae and Desmidiaceae of the European Lowlands
905011265X / 9789050112659 New

2007. 25cm. Pp.352. Photo-micrographs and figures. Hardbound with CD-ROM.

Desmids of the Lowlands aims to represent all desmid taxa known from the Netherlands and adjacent lowland areas. Over 500 species and more than 150 additional varieties are dealt with. Because of the predominantly cosmopolitan nature of most species the flora may also be of use outside the above-mentioned geographical region. The enclosed CD-rom offers general information on desmid biology as well as a selection of species that are discussed in more detail. Ecological data, both on separate species and desmid communities, enable a characterization of the habitat sampled. A digital calculation method for the assessment of desmid-related conservation value is included.

The Biology and Ecology of Tintinnid Ciliates: Models for Marine Plankton, Dolan, John R; David J. S. Montagnes, Sabine Agatha, D. Wayne Coats & Diane K. Stoecker (editors)
3 Dolan, John R; David J. S. Montagnes, Sabine Agatha, D. Wayne Coats & Diane K. Stoecker (editors) The Biology and Ecology of Tintinnid Ciliates: Models for Marine Plankton
0470671513 / 9780470671511 New

2012. 26cm. Pp.344. Hardbound

Planktonic protists both produce and consume most of the primary production in the world ocean. They not only play key roles in the oceans but also represent an astounding amount of diversity: ecological morphological and genetic. However, for most taxa their ecology, morphology, phylogeny and biogeography are either poorly known or appear to be largely unrelated to one another; this hinders our understanding of their biology as well as interpretation of emerging genetic data.

Tintinnid ciliates represent a singular exception. Compared to nearly all other groups of planktonic protists, there is a very substantial and relatively detailed literature (both modern and historical) on tintinnids.

The Biology and Ecology of Tintinnid Ciliates synthesizes knowledge concerning a wide variety of topics ranging from anatomy and systematics, physiology, behavior, ecology (including ecological roles, predators, parasites, biogeography, and cysts) to fossil history.

2000. 26cm. Pp.712. Hardbound.

The term "zooplankton" describes the community of floating, often microscopic, animals that inhabit aquatic environments. Being near the base of the food chain, they serve as food for larger animals, such as fish.

The ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Zooplankton Methodology Manual provides comprehensive coverage of modern techniques in zooplankton ecology written by a group of international experts. Chapters include sampling, acoustic and optical methods, estimation of feeding, growth, reproduction and metabolism, and up-to-date treatment of population genetics and modeling. This book will be a key reference work for marine scientists throughout the world.
