2015. 26cm. Pp.296. Colour photo-plates, micrographs, keys to species. Hardbound.

This is the second edition of Freshwater Algae ; the popular guide to temperate freshwater algae. This book uniquely combines practical information on sampling and experimental techniques with an explanation of basic algal taxonomy plus a key to identify the more frequently-occurring organisms. Fully revised, it describes major bioindicator species in relation to key environmental parameters and their implications for aquatic management.

This second edition includes:

the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide an easily accessible source of information on algae within standing and flowing waters, and the problems they may cause

the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readily observable morphological features that can be readily observed under a conventional light microscope

up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomic status, analytical microtechniques and the potential role of computer analysis in algal biology

upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extra species information, full colour photographs of live algae – including many new images from the USA and China

Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highly specialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as a laboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquatic biologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners and researchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry and academia.

Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean, Boltovskoy, Demetrio (editor)
5 Boltovskoy, Demetrio (editor) Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean
9075000766 / 9789075000764 New

2005. Biodiversity DVD.

Zooplankton of the South Atlantic Ocean is a unique taxonomic reference work covering almost 2,600 plankton species occurring in the South Atlantic Ocean.

These are classified under 1,300 higher taxa, such as the Medusae, Siphonophorae, Ctenophora, Chaetognatha, planktonic Tunicata and Polychaeta, pelagic Gastropoda and Cephalopoda, and a vast group of planktonic Crustacea. Fifteen of the 28 higher-level groups treated have new interactive, illustrated keys to family, genus or species level. Also, four different Identifylt keys are provided on this DVD-ROM: one for the Foraminifera, one for the Siphonophorae, and two for the Hydromedusae.

IdentifyIt is a multiple-entry identification key that allows you to define multiple characters for a specimen and then calculates which species is the closest match. For most groups, geographical and vertical distribution patterns are given, from equatorial waters to the Antarctic circumpolar belt. General introductory information on morphology, reproduction, development, feeding, production rates, etc. is included, and the 3345 literature references provided will help to guide the user towards the relevant papers on each subject. A section on methodology is part of this information system as well. Common biological, morphological and geographical terms are captured in an illustrated glossary defining 1375 terms. All text is ‘hyperlinked’, enabling quick navigation through the massive amount of information.

This authoritative work, compiled and edited by Prof. Demetrio Boltovskoy, provides contributions from 41 oceanographers and marine biologists. It is a remarkable and fundamental source of information for marine biologists, oceanographers, environmentalists and students and deserves to be widely available in both personal and scientific libraries.

Windows XP and Macintosh OSX DVD-ROM.

The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa, Darwall, Will ; K. Smith, D. Tweddle & P. Skelton
11 Darwall, Will ; K. Smith, D. Tweddle & P. Skelton The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa
2831711266 / 9782831711263 New

2009. 28cm. Pp.118. Binding : ebook.

Biodiversity within inland water ecosystems in southern Africa is highly diverse and of great importance to livelihoods and economies, however, development activities are not always compatible with the conservation of this diversity and it is poorly represented in the development planning process. One of the main reasons is a lack of readily available information on the status and distribution of inland water taxa.

In response to this need for information, the IUCN Species Programme, in collaboration with the South Africa Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) conducted a regional assessment of 1,279 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs, and selected families of aquatic plants from across southern Africa, resulting in this book, The Status and Distribution of Freshwater Biodiversity in Southern Africa.

In the process of the study, which is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, regional experts from five of these countries were trained in biodiversity assessment methods, including application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and species mapping using GIS software. Distribution ranges have been mapped for the majority of species so providing an important tool for application to the conservation and development planning processes.

0470671513 / 9780470671511 New

2012. 26cm. Pp.344. Hardbound

Planktonic protists both produce and consume most of the primary production in the world ocean. They not only play key roles in the oceans but also represent an astounding amount of diversity: ecological morphological and genetic. However, for most taxa their ecology, morphology, phylogeny and biogeography are either poorly known or appear to be largely unrelated to one another; this hinders our understanding of their biology as well as interpretation of emerging genetic data.

Tintinnid ciliates represent a singular exception. Compared to nearly all other groups of planktonic protists, there is a very substantial and relatively detailed literature (both modern and historical) on tintinnids.

The Biology and Ecology of Tintinnid Ciliates synthesizes knowledge concerning a wide variety of topics ranging from anatomy and systematics, physiology, behavior, ecology (including ecological roles, predators, parasites, biogeography, and cysts) to fossil history.

Cephalopod Culture, Iglesias, José ; Lidia Fuentes & Roger Villanueva (editors)
25 Iglesias, José ; Lidia Fuentes & Roger Villanueva (editors) Cephalopod Culture
9789401786478 New

2014. 26cm. Pp.xiii, 494. 140 photos & figures (40 in colour). Hardbound.

Cephalopod Culture is the first compilation of research on the culture of cephalopods. It describes experiences of culturing different groups of cephalopods : nautiluses, sepioids (Sepia officinalis, Sepia pharaonis, Sepiella inermis, Sepiella japonica Euprymna hyllebergi, Euprymna tasmanica), squids (Loligo vulgaris, Doryteuthis opalescens, Sepioteuthis lessoniana) and octopods (Amphioctopus aegina, Enteroctopus megalocyathus, Octopus maya, Octopus mimus, Octopus minor, Octopus vulgaris, Robsonella fontaniana).

‘Cephalopod Culture’ also looks to the future. Recent breakthroughs, such as the successful rearing of large octopus hatchlings on a wholly artificial diet of squid paste, are highlighted, as are areas requiring further research; for example, there is a need to understand better the nutritional requirements of planktonic hatchlings so that appropriately enriched zooplankton can be raised as prey items. This makes this book not only an ideal introduction to cephalopod culture, but also a valuable resource for those already involved in this topic.
