Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is a pelagic species which inhabits warm and temperate coastal waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The species is of great importance for fisheries worldwide; in 1978, it ranked third in importance in catches by species (3.4 million tonnes), while in 1979 and 1980 it ranked fourth and fifth, with 2.8 and 2.6 million tonnes, respectively. In 1966, the species ranked fifth with a worldwide catch of 2.1 million tonnes. It is mainly caught with purse seines, sometimes using light, and also by trolling, lines, gillnets, traps, beach seines and midwater trawls.

Research on the large array of tropical estuarine fishes has increased markedly in recent years and hence scientific knowledge about most aspects of these important fishes' biology and ecology is now catching up with that of their temperate equivalents.

Tropical Estuarine Fishes, Ecology, Exploitation & Conservation is a landmark book which draws together a vast wealth of information on tropical estuarine fishes and provides a vital reference point for all aspects of their study.

The book's comprehensive contents include thorough coverage of the types and distribution of these fishes, their diversity and the environmental conditions and communities in which they live.

Full details of their biology and ecology are included, as are details of these fishes' dependence on estuaries, man's interaction with the estuarine fish community and the conservation of estuarine species and the often threatened habitats upon which they depend.

20 Carrier, J.C., J.A.Musick & M.R. Heithaus (editors) Sharks and Their Relatives II: Biodiversity, Adaptive Physiology, and Conservation
1420080474 / 9781420080476 New

2010. 26cm. Pp.736. Hardbound.

Since the award-winning first volume, The Biology of Sharks and Their Relatives, published in 2004, the field has witnessed tremendous developments in research, rapid advances in technology, and the emergence of new investigators beginning to explore issues of biodiversity, distribution, physiology, and ecology in ways that eluded more traditional studies.

As an entirely new companion volume, Sharks and Their Relatives II: Biodiversity, Adaptive Physiology, and Conservation brings you up to speed on these significant changes, specifically examining how elasmobranch fishes – the sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras – successfully survive in a wide range of habitats.

With contributions from an international group of investigators, this multidisciplinary volume begins by examining elasmobranch biodiversity patterns and their integrated sensory systems. It then explores the physiological adaptations – from unique sensory modalities to compensatory mechanisms for physiological and environmental stress – that make these animals particularly well suited for the range of habitats where they are found, in both oceanic and freshwater realms.

The book then considers the human interactions and anthropogenic effects on worldwide elasmobranch populations and the potential extinction risks posed by increasing threats from changes in habitat, changes in water chemistry, and growing commercial exploitation. This text truly is unrivaled in terms of coverage and readability, and it is a must-have reference for marine biologists, fishery scientists, oceanographers, and also marine, zoo, and aquarium veterinarians.
